Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand has fired a stern warning to Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana after a costly mistake against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.

The former Ajax shot-stopper joined the Red Devils in the summer as a replacement for Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea.

Onana's signing came with a lot of optimism, but he has failed to live up to expectations since moving to England.

During United's first group game in this season's Champions League, the former Inter Milan goalie made a costly mistake that led to the first goal of the match.

Onana failed to keep out Leroy Sane's weak shot from the edge of the box after he was teed up by Harry Kane, according to Manchester Evening News.

After the first half, Ferdinand, who was a guest at TNT Sports, expressed frustration that Onana conceded such a weak effort off Sane's foot.

"This is a nightmare scenario for Onana.
"He's as confident as you like with his feet, but as a goalkeeper, you're paid to come in and make saves.
"It's a great bit of skill from Sane and he’s set up but he doesn't hit it with any real purpose. It’s not wide of him, it's not in the corners.
"Onana’s reaction, he should save it, it is meat and drink for him. He should be picking this up and looking for his next pass. It's a very, very bad mistake and one that he needs to recover from."

Manchester United went on to lose the match against the Bavarians 4-3, with new signing Rasmus Hojlund scoring his first goal and former Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro getting a brace.

Onana on replacing De Gea

Sports Brief earlier reported that Onana has admitted that replacing David de Gea has not been an easy task, following his difficult start to the season.

The former Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper remains confident the team will turn around after their slow start.
